Being an entrepreneur definitely has its advantages, but it can also be extremely challenging if you have a Wife and kids at home. Let’s face it, as an entrepreneur you want to be your own boss and create an amazing lifestyle for yourself and others. However, to achieve the level of success that you want to achieve it takes massive effort and sacrifice (especially on the front end). Now the question is “Should I work non-stop now so we can live the life we want sooner or should I focus on enjoying all of these precious moments with my kids while they are young”. I had to ask myself this question and while doing so I became aware of 3 Ways to Improve my Work-Life Balance.
As the old saying goes, “Communication is the Key”. My Wife and I have been together since we were 18 years old. It has truly been a blessing to watch us grow together from our teens to twenties, and now thirties. One of the best things we do is communicate with each other. I will admit, there are times when she may say things I don’t want to hear, but out of respect and love for her, I do listen to her side of the conversation so we can strengthen our relationship. Being able to properly communicate with your significant other is vital to your success. Making sure that he or she knows that they are important to you while in the process of building your business can and will go a long way.
The same is true with children. I have two kids that want to play with Daddy ALL DAY. They do not care if I have worked 12 hours that day; when they see me it’s playtime. My daughter also never wants me to leave for work. That’s when I have to communicate to her that I have to work so that we can do things like have family Disneyland passes and things of that nature. Communicating to your family about how much you love them and showing them that they are important can make this process a little bit easier.
2. Your Most Important Appointments
I’ve been in real estate since 2010. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to help people buy and sell homes from $50,000 to over $1,000,000. My focus is to treat all people from all financial levels with respect and integrity. However, there are some appointments that are more important than others. One of those appointments would be Family Time.
As entrepreneurs, we can get caught up in the business from time to time. For example, last night I told my wife that I would sleep in until 7am today because she feels I do not get enough sleep. It’s currently 6:15 am and I’m writing this blog because I felt I had to share this information because it is truly improving the quality of my life (and it’s quiet because the kids are sleep). I know she will give me “that look” when she wakes up, but she will forgive me. I’m sure there are worst things that a husband could be doing. As you can see, I still get caught up in the business but I have learned the importance of Setting Appointments with my Family.
For example, yesterday I structured my day to allow me to spend the afternoon with my wife and kids. We went to the mall and played games at Dave and Busters. It was a great time. I did have someone wanting to meet with me at that time, but I was able to reschedule the meeting for the following day, which was fine with my client. If I can make time to meet with clients, I can also make time to spend with those that I love. Another important appointment that we need to set as Entrepreneurs is with ourselves. Making sure that we are good emotionally, spiritually, and physically is critical towards our long-term success.
3. Being More Efficient
One of the many things we can do to free up more time to do things we want outside of business is being more efficient. Parkinson’s Law states that “Work expands to fill the time allotted for it”. By becoming more efficient in our business, this will allow us more time for our personal life. Instead of taking 8 hours of your day to complete certain tasks, why not get creative on how we can complete the same tasks in 5 hours and use the other 3 hours for yourself and family time.
With the advances in technology, we can use these tools to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible. One of these tools would be ClickFunnels. Having the ability to generate more leads for my business online (24 hours per day) helps improve my work-life balance. Also, planning the night before helps me become more efficient when I wake up which makes a big difference.
Going back to my original question, “Should I work non-stop now so we can live the life we want sooner or should I focus on enjoying all of these precious moments with my kids while they are so young”? I think it is a combination of both. You want to work hard and smart to ensure that you growing the business while at the same time not neglecting the ones that you love. Communicating with your family and setting appointments with them to spend quality time is the key. By also adding tools and techniques to increase your efficiency, this will eventually make a big impact on improving your work-life balance.
